Rice Bran

When harvested from the field, rice in encased in the rice hull.  Rice is then dried and the hull is removed during the initial stage of processing.  The next stage of processing consists of removing the outer brown layer (rice bran) to produce white rice.  Rice Bran then is composed of rice germ and several sublayers.  Processing of rice bran is needed and produces variable fat levels ranging from 14% to 22% crude fat.  Rice bran according to AAFCO definitions can fall into four processing categories, 1)Solvent extracted rice bran, 2) Rice bran, 3) Parboiled rice bran and 4) Stabilized rice bran.  Each category has different nutrient levels and quality standards to define it.  Thus, variability in “Rice Bran” can be large depending on the category of rice bran actually being sold.  The level of free fatty acids in rice bran also will increase as rice bran ages.  As the free fatty acid content increases in rice bran, the palatability will decrease.  Stabilized rice bran is the only category of rice bran that is monitored for fatty acid content and it must contain less then 4% free fatty acids.

Ultimate Finish

Ultimate Finish is a advanced feed formulated for horses involved in training, competition, showing, sales preparation and for all horses that would benefit from additional fat calories in their diet..  It is an extruded particle that is designed to improve palatability and nutrient availability.  Ultimate Finish is a energy dense particle that provides horses a balance of calcium, phosphorus, trace minerals and vitamins with the benefit of optimal fatty acid profiles.  It also contains a high quality protein source and many blood-building nutrients that are needed for all lifestyles of horses.   The extrusion process used to make Ultimate Finish and, the added nutrients it contains contribute to it being a high quality fat supplement with a long shelf life and a guaranteed constant supply of nutrition for horses.

FAT FACTS

  1. Rice bran is not balanced for mineral content.  The level of phosphorus in rice bran is much higher then the calcium level.  This can cause several metabolic problems in the horse.

  1. Ultimate Finish is balanced for mineral content.  Ultimate Finish has a calcium/phosphorus ratio that is designed to be the optimal ratio for the horse’s metabolic needs.  Ultimate Finish also has added levels of copper, zinc, selenium, manganese, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, thiamine, lysine and methionine.

  1. The nutrient content of rice bran is not constant.

  1. The fat level of Ultimate Finish is guaranteed to be 25% crude fat.

  1. The fat level of rice bran can vary depending upon the process by which it is made.

  1. The shelf life of rice bran depends upon the fatty acid content.

  1. Rice bran is classified as a feed ingredient.

  1. Addition of rice bran to a grain mix will adversely change the calcium and phosphorus mineral balance.

Economic Analysis (Lets Push the Pencil)

Use the prices of Ultimate Finish and rice bran in your area in the equations listed below to help determine the price per pound of fat or the feeding cost per day for the Ultimate Finish and rice bran.  These examples assume a price of $21.00/bag for Ultimate Finish and $25.00/bag for rice bran.

Price per Pound of Fat

Ultimate Finish                                         Rice Bran

50 lbs X (.25% fat) = 12.5 lbs fat                        50 lbs X (.20% fat) = 10 lbs fat

$21.00 per bag/12.5 lbs fat = $1.68/lb fat          $25.00 per bag/10 lbs fat = $2.50/lb fat

Price per Day

Ultimate Finish                                    Rice Bran

$21.00 per bag/50 lb bag = 42 cts/lb             $25.00 per bag/50 lb bag  = 50cts/lb

42 cts/lb X (2.0 lbs/day)   =84 cts/day          50 cts/lb X (2.0 lbs/day)   = $1.00/day

2.0 lbs/day feeding rate    = .5 lbs fat/day    2.0 lbs/day feeding rate  = .4 lbs fat/day
