How do you provide all the nutrients for the suckling foal?

Most mare's milk will meet the protein and caloric needs for growth, but as lactation progresses, minerals important in skeletal development diminish. By five weeks of lactation, some mineral levels have dropped by 50%.

To provide these nutrients for the suckling foal, Buckeye Equine Nutrition has developed a trace mineral and vitamin product, formulated to complement mare's milk, without increasing protein or calories. Instead of early weaning to force the foals to consume enough fortified foal feed, we can now provide the missing nutrients with Foal-Aide, in paste or drench form.

When suckling foals shows an interest in eating dry feed, provide Buckeye Foal Starter, a milk-based pellet formulated to complement mare's milk.

Whether to use Foal-Aide or Foal Starter will depend on the quantity of milk produced by the mare, and the resulting appetite of the foal
