Orphan foal
07.05.2011 | Becky Zeune | OH
On May 14th my maiden mini mare foaled a cute little colt...from the beginning I believe she associated him with lots of pain...she refused to let him nurse...I had to hold her and even then she would cow-kick and bite him...the only time he could nurse is when I went out and held the mare...by the following day as I was watching by camera...she stared to charge him..I quickly removed him from her stall...on day two we started him on Mare's Milk Plus....and at the same time I was milking her....it soon became apparent that she was in no way going to accept him...so he became the first orphan foal we have had in almost 20 years....
He will be 7 weeks old on Saturday....he is now also eating the Foal Starter Pellets. I am enclosing some pics of our little orphan...my little grandaugther has named him Spirit...

Usually our orphaned foals will receive the Mares Milk Plus and Foal Starter milk pellets at the same time. As you notice the foal consuming more of the Foal Starter, you can decrease the amount of Mares Milk until she has been weaned off of it. As the foal continues to consume Foal Starter, it can then be transitioned to a Growth diet or Gro N Win.

So sorry about your loss. Since your filly is not readily drinking the milk replacer, Foal Starter™ is a good choice for her until she gets older. It is an easily digestible milk-based pellet scientifically formulated to transition your filly from nursing to solid food. She should be consuming around 1 lb of Foal Starter™ per 100 lbs of body weight. Allow her access to high quality, readily digestible forage and clean, fresh water. When she is 3 to 4 months of age, you can transition her to a grain ration formulated for growing horses such as Gro 'n Win® or Growth™. If you have any additional questions, please contact our care line at 800-898-WINS(9467).

As for the mares, they will also do well on the Gro 'n Win. Depending on their stage of reproduction, they will need between 1/4-3/4 lbs per day of Gro 'n Win. You can find more information on feeding Gro 'n Win on our website: http://www.gro-n-win.com/
