Gut Health is Important

Is your feed keeping your horse’s gut out of balance?

One of the true medical and nutritional breakthroughs of the last decade has been a deeper understanding and appreciation for the link between gut health and overall health. It’s a link that has applications in both human and veterinary medicine.

As it turns out, a healthy microbiome (microorganisms that inhabit the gut as well as other parts of the body) is key to keeping a body in balance, even if that body weighs more than 1,000 pounds. Which is why, in conjunction with the United Kingdom’s WALTHAM Petcare Science Institute, BUCKEYE Nutrition has developed a revolutionary new horse feed based on this deeper understanding of how horses’ bodies work.

The feed is called EQ8 (pronounced “Equate”) and it comes in three unique formulations – EQ8 Gut Health, EQ8 Performance and EQ8 Senior. Each of the feeds was created for easy digestion and balanced health in horses of every age and performance level.

At the heart of EQ8 is Well-Gut, a proprietary ingredient blend that consists of three nutritional powerhouses that each play a key role in a horse’s overall digestive health. These include marine-sourced calcium (calcite), which serves as a buffer to acidic stomach environments; heat-stabilized yeast and super fibers for immune system support; and a tailored blend of live probiotics found to be present in the healthiest of hindguts.

“Digestion, while central to what we do at BUCKEYE, isn’t something people spend a lot of time thinking about compared to other aspects of a horse’s health,” said Dr. Nettie Liburt, Senior Equine Nutrition Manager at BUCKEYE Nutrition. “But it’s central to everything. That’s why we use a process called extrusion in all our EQ8 products, which is a way of pre-digesting the feed so key nutrients and amino acids are better absorbed, and the amount of starch reaching the hindgut is reduced. Combine that with fiber-rich ingredients and prebiotics, and you have a literal recipe for a thriving gut that helps good bacteria proliferate while protecting against bad bacteria.”
